Why Our OTs Love Obi!

• Easy to use
If a person can operate an adaptive switch with a momentary touch from any part of their body and chew and swallow without assistance, they can use Obi.

• Independence
Obi provides full choice and control about what to eat and when.

• Social interaction
Obi enables people to feed themselves, when they otherwise would be reliant on another person which creates a more independent and social dining experience.

• Reusable and easy to clean
The plate, placemat and spoons are BPA-free and reusable, microwave and dishwasher safe, making heating food and cleaning easy.

• Travels easily
Obi can be easily folded for travel and taken to different dining occasions at home and in public. It is smaller than a standard placement and weighs about the same as a laptop.

• Innovative Design
The minimalist design means Obi does not look overtly clinical and the technology is unique to Obi, meaning there is no equivalent product available in the current market.

About Obi

Obi is made by DESiN, LLC, a company founded by father and son Tom and Jon Dekar in 2010 who believe that living with physical challenges can be fulfilling and inspiring. Their goal is to develop technology, and specifically robotics, combined with modern design, to facilitate this.

The first Obi prototype was developed in 2006 by Jon when he was a University of Dayton engineering student and saw the challenges faced by people with disabilities, including his own grandfather who was diagnosed with a degenerative neuromuscular condition. Jon saw first hand how hard it was for his grandfather to eat independently, which led Jon to research what technology was available to help people to eat, who did not have full use of their upper extremities. After years of research, design, prototypes and testing, the first Obi was released in 2016.

The name “Obi” is derived from the word “obeisance” which is a term for a gesture of respect or deference, such as a bow or curtsy. In recognition of this, the Obi device fluidly “bows” to its user when turned on.
